Piazza San Marco / Piazza San Marco
Piazza San Marco, looked over by the incessant gaze of the four bronze horses placed on the roof-top of the St. Mark’s Cathedral, is the main square of Venice. That is the very place where one of the greatest examples of gothic architecture, Doge’s palace is situated. Doge’s palace is the former residence of Venetian regents and the senate’s building. In front of it there is the biggest and the most ancient Venetian library, and the square ends up at the stairs of byzantine St. Mark’s Cathedral. Piazza San Marco has always been the center of Venetian political life and witnessed knight tournaments and executions, parades, processions and carnivals. And this is the place where innumerous Venetian doves are fed since medieval times.
